Scientists found the giant meteorite near the town of Gancedo, northern Argentina – a renowned meteorite crash site covered in craters from a meteor shower more than 4,000 years ago.
The enormous space rock currently measures up as the third-largest ever to hit planet Earth, behind the whopping 37-ton El Chaco meteorite discovered in nearby Gran Chaco and the Hoba meteorite – a goliath object weighing around 60 tonnes.
“While we hoped for weights above what had been registered, we did not expect it to exceed 30 tons,” Mario Vesconi, President of the Astronomy Association of Chaco, said.
“We will weigh it again.
“Apart from wanting the added confidence of a double-check of the initial readings we took, the fact that its weight is such a surprise to us makes us want to recalibrate.”
More than 750,000 people have seen the incredible footage since the video was posted on YouTube on Monday (Sep 12).
“There is definitely an alien in there,” said one viewer.
“This is how all sci-fi horror movies start.”
Another commenter seemed to agree: “Gotta be careful of that sort of thing. Brain-eating space bugs may crawl out of it.”
