Scientists Have Now Invented a Camera That Can See Through The Human Body

Recently, a new camera which contains the ability to see through the human body was created by scientists. According to various reports, the machine was created in order to track medical tools like endoscopes in patient’s bodies.

And not only is this device capable of finding medical tools it can also investigate internal conditions inside of the body, according to a study published in the journal Biomedical Optics Express.

“This is an enabling technology that allows us to see through the human body. It has immense potential for diverse applications such as the one described in this work,” said Kev Dhaliwal, Professor at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

“The ability to see a device’s location is crucial for many applications in healthcare, as we move forwards with minimally invasive approaches to treating disease,” Dhaliwal added.

Until this most recent invention, it had not been possible to track equipment without X-rays or other costly methods. Currently, available methods can make it quite difficult to detect the endoscope within the body due to the fact that the light beams shatter or bounce off of tissues and organs. However, with this camera, they are given the exact location of the equipment because the camera can measure individual photons and measure the time it takes for light to pass through the body.

And this project is only one of many amazing projects currently underway by the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, who is a part of the Proteus Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration. According to the BBC, this team is also currently working towards a wide-range of new technologies that would be able to diagnose and treat lung diseases.

“I hope we can continue this interdisciplinary approach to make a real difference in healthcare technology.”
