The image was snapped above Arizona this month and has been uploaded to YouTube.
Channel MrMBB333 revealed the image in a footage entitled Hand of God and said it was emailed to him and to the best of its knowledge was not digitally edited.
The image shows a shadowy shape over a sunset that appears to resemble an outstretched hand.
One YouTube user wrote: “It’s a miracle.”
YouTube viewer Lisa Kirk posted: “I love the hand of God photo.
“Those of us who believe do not need a reminder but in these crazy days it is nice to see he shows us his love.”
Others suggested it had been edited.
Scott C Waring, a paranormal and UFO blogger, featured the image on his website ufosightingsdaily.com.
He wrote: “This sunset photo looks like a giant hand reaching up.
“It’s easy to take it as a sign since the outreached hand is often a sign of helping out others…a sign of love, caring and friendship.
“Since the abilities of angels and some aliens are in essence equal, its comes to reason that one can be the other, but this sign was meant for someone out there. It has purpose to it.”
Sceptics say claims like this are nothing more than conspiracy theories.
They say images like this are just the result of pareidolia when the brain tricks the eyes into seeing familiar objects or shapes in textures or patterns like the surface of a rock or clouds.
Sceptic Scott Brando, who runs hoax-busting website ufoofinterest.org, which debunks alleged paranormal events, said: “I think it’s an effect like crepuscular rays, but for a confirmation I’d need the original image by the author.
“If the image is real, the hand is a pareidolia effect, but, in my opinion, without the original picture, I think it is a fake.”
