People Who Talk To Themselves Aren’t Crazy, They’re Actually Geniuses


    I’m sure that we all have seen someone talking to themselves at one point or another. Most of the time we brush those people off as crazy, but studies show that these people are actually geniuses.

    As a writer, I talk to myself a lot. It helps me to keep my concentration on the activity on hand, makes me focus more on my research, and gives me some pretty brilliant ideas; more importantly, I produce better work.

    A study published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology shows that talking to yourself is actually beneficial.

    In the experiment, Gary Lupya and Daniel Swigley gave 20 people the name of an object and were told to find it in a supermarket. During the first trial, participants were told to be silent. In the second, they were told to repeat the name of the object until they found it. Naturally, the subjects not bound to silence found the items sooner than those bound to silence.

    Numerous studies have explored this phenomenon and found that talking to yourself can actually boost your ability to process and store information. In other words, talking to yourself will not only help you learn information more quickly and efficiently, but it will also improve your long-term memory.

    It could also help you find your way in life! Repeating your goals and ambitions aloud will reinforce your determination to achieve them and rid your mind from unnecessary distraction.

    By doing this, you basically break everything down into a series of individual, clear steps that you will be able to tackle much more easily that approaching the problem head on.

    It isn’t just adults either, but children, especially toddlers and babies, greatly benefit from the so-called ‘self-directed speech’. Scientists believe that it helps guide children’s behavior, claiming that vocalizing directions allow them to approach a problem more methodically while also making them more adept at following them later in life.

    So the next time you feel weird or out of place for talking to yourself, don’t dwell on it. It is a good thing! Watch out, your genius is showing!
