Sure, we know that a lot of people fast and we know how significant it is in some religions and cultures, but have you ever stopped to think about what it was doing to the human body? I, for one, have never fasted before but may give it a go after learning about this.

Research carried out at the University of Southern California has found that fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire human immune system! Yes, fasting makes you much healthier than you could ever imagine. Researchers on this describe their study as a remarkable breakthrough and fasting truly seems to be a wonderful natural option when it comes to boosting the immune system.

Researchers claim that fasting pretty much flips a switch that prompts stem cells to create new white blood cells. The lead researcher on this study, Professor Valter Longo says that the study proved fasting could help the body in producing a whole new immune system. During the experimental stages of this study, some people were asked by the researchers to fast for 2-4 days over a period of 6 whole months.

“It gives the ‘ok’ for stem cells to go ahead and begin proliferating and rebuild the entire system. And the good news is that the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or old, the inefficient parts, during the fasting. Now, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or aging, fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system.”

They noted that fasting helped to also reduce the enzyme PKA, this being a hormone that increases cancer risk and tumor growth linked to aging. Prolonged fasting seemed to force the body to use stores of glucose and fat. These findings are quite interesting.

“We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarkable effect in promoting stem cell-based regeneration of the hematopoietic system. When you starve, the system tries to save energy and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged.”

Of course, more research will need to be done in the future, but it seems like we are headed in a great direction. Who knows? Maybe someday we will be able to fully understand this and fast with ease. To learn more on how to do a 3-day fast check out the video below.
