Doomsday Clock Now Set for 2 Minutes to Midnight

Atomic Scientists who run the metaphorical Doomsday Clock have changed the time again. We are now sitting at just two minutes to midnight!

This comes as a warning that all should listen to, tension has been far too high for far too long. While this mere thirty-second change might not seem like much to most but when you really think about it, it becomes apparent that we are closer to ‘doomsday’ than we have ever been before. Last year this clock went from three minutes to midnight to two and a half and now is sitting right at two minutes to midnight.

Lawrence Krauss and Robert Rosner wrote in the Washington Post just this past Thursday as follows:

“The world is not only more dangerous now than it was a year ago, it is as threatening as it has been since World War II.”

“In fact, the Doomsday clock is as close to midnight today as it was in 1953 when Cold War fears perhaps reached their highest levels.”

“To call the world nuclear situation dire is to understate the danger – and its immediacy. North Korea’s nuclear weapons program appeared to make remarkable progress in 2017, increasing risks for itself, other countries in the region and the US.”

“Neither allies nor adversaries have been able to reliably predict US actions of discerning between sincere US pronouncements and mere rhetoric.”

“And in the Middle East, uncertainty about continued US support for the landmark Iranian nuclear deal adds to a bleak overall picture.”

“The Trump administration’s decision essentially to turn a blind eye to climate change transpired against a backdrop of worsening climate, including exceedingly powerful hurricanes in the Caribbean and other parts of North America and extreme heat waves in Australia, South America, Asia, Europe, and California.”

To be completely honest it is hard to argue with their assessment. As tensions rise and global issues go ignored things will eventually lead to our demise however it presents itself. I for one have been hoping changes would have been made by now, why has nothing been done? Is nuclear war our goal? It sure seems that way.

Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons has stated as follows in regards to this:

“The actions and policies of the nuclear-armed states are winding the Doomsday Clock towards midnight. We have been lucky to avoid conflict through intentional or accidental means, but recent posturing and the false alarms in Hawaii and Japan show our luck is about to run out if we don’t move quickly.

A security based on luck is reckless and foolish; it’s exactly what the nuclear states have now. 122 nations voted for the nuclear ban Treaty and other nations need to join the process so we can stop flirting with our own destruction and destroy the Doomsday Clock once and for all.”

What do you think about all of this? The world is already such a scary place, can it really get any worse?
