Since Donald Trump was elected on November 8, many have warned that he could eventually be the cause of a massive nuclear war. This past Thursday, Trump confirmed their suspicions by tweeting in favor or expanding America’s nuclear artillery.

His exact words in his Twitter post was, “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes. ”

Of course, his words sparked an array of criticism and left experts stunned. Many were puzzled regarding Trump’s idea of what could make his statement happen. While his aides were unable to explain what he had meant by his statement, Trump explained that the most extreme reading of his words would be correct.

On Friday, Trump once again confirmed exactly how extreme his words were intended to be by saying, “Let it be an arms race. We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all.”

Trump’s policy comes in stark contrast to Obama’s. Earlier in the year, Obama asserted that “Of all the threats to global security and peace, the most dangerous is the proliferation and potential use of nuclear weapons.”

However, Obama spoke those words in contradiction to his past actions and words. During his eight-year presidency, he worked to modernize our nuclear weaponry, which included “sweeping nuclear modernization that include improved weapons, bombers, missiles and submarines.” His plan is an expensive one as well, as it will cost the nation over one trillion dollars over the next thirty years.

Trumps advocating of a nuclear arms race doesn’t appear to be a more viable option for a president, either. Could this be the beginning signs of what is to come with a Trump presidency? Hopefully not, because a nuclear arms race is the last thing the world needs while we wait uneasily worried that World War III could begin at any moment. It would appear that the world has had enough war and aggression, and is not currently in need of any escalation in this field.
