While we all assumed the youngest child of the family was almost always the favorite we now seem to have confirmation. As the oldest child of the family, this is something I cannot wait to share with my Mother who claims to have never picked favorites.

According to a study coming from researchers at Brigham Young University’s School of Family Life, the youngest sibling is more likely to be the parents’ favorite. They also noted that usually, the sibling that believes they are the favorite is.  The parent-child relationship is much stronger between the youngest for some reason. For this study, these researchers actually followed 300 families and asked the children as well as the parents various questions.

These questions were all in regards to assessing their levels of favoritism. The parents were, of course, asked how much conflict, as well as warmth they experienced with their children and the older children of each family, were asked to describe their relationships with their parents. They found that for the youngest child parents have a hard time being able to tell them ‘no.’ Meaning the youngest child is often ‘babied’ as if you are a middle child or oldest child you probably have noticed.

Younger siblings seem to place more of a comparison on themselves as well when it comes to their older siblings. While the youngest child looks up to everyone, the middle child will only look up to those older than him or her and then things continue on from there. This explains the ‘babying’ to an extent.

Did you grow up in a household with more than one child? If so who was your parent’s favorite? Do you think they were wrong for having a favorite in the first place or do you think it was justifiable? Please feel free to check out the video below to learn more about birth order.
