5 Conditions That Seem Like Depression, But Aren’t


    Depression; it’s like we see it and hear about it every day in this modern day society. More and more people are suffering from it, but we never stopped to think it might be something else causing it.

    Depression is a horrific thing to suffer from. Whether it was the result of a traumatic experience or it just suddenly appeared amidst our adolescence, it tends to linger. Not only does it linger, but more and more people are being diagnosed with depression. Certainly, depression is not something anyone should be struggling with and there definitely shouldn’t be millions of people suffering from the same issue. There are a lot of things that can result in feelings similar to depression, all in all, life just does that to you from time to time. Perhaps everyone has depression because there’s constantly someone telling us that we have it and trying to give us drugs that do not fix a thing. There are even other health issues that can resemble the symptoms of depression!

    According to research published in ‘Current Psychiatry” in 2012, some 45% of patients referred for depression do not even meet the diagnostic criteria for a depressive illness. That is almost half of all cases, and that means those people being treated for depression and taking drugs for it, didn’t even have the condition, to begin with.  That’s a scary thought.

    If you suffer from depressive symptoms you’re certainly not alone. It might even go as far as something totally not being right, and that’s okay – but it doesn’t mean you have a depressive illness. It very well could be one of the five illnesses below. They closely resemble depression symptoms!

    1. Vitamin D Deficiency

    Vitamins are essential to our overall health and we tend to forget about them in the modern day. Any responsible doctor should know to get a blood test to check this before giving someone an antidepressant prescription, but guess what – my doctor didn’t. Did yours? One 2009 study actually found that as many as three quarters of American teens and adults are vitamin D deficient. Being deficient in vitamin D can cause you to become fatigued, depressed, or all around sad. One systematic review of other 14 different studies found that it can even increase your odds of developing depression.

    2. Hypothyroidism

    Hypothyroidism can even make you feel depressed. Hypothyroidism is renowned for its symptoms of depression, exhaustion, worthlessness, and irritability. It can make getting through the average day increasingly more difficult. There are over 300 million people suffering from hypothyroidism in the world and you might be one of them. You should certainly go get checked out by an endocrinologist before taking antidepressants.

    3. Low Blood Sugar

    Even something as small as low blood sugar can make you feel worthless. Hunger is a primitive sense that can set off a stress response similar to depression. If food intake isn’t consistent it can cause a world of mood changes and they can be triggered by blood sugar drops and fluctuations, according to Naturopathic doctor Peter Bongiorno.

    4. Dehydration

    Even dehydration can make you feel like your whole world is crashing down around you. According to studies conducted at the University of Connecticut’s Human Performance laboratory mild dehydration can affect a person’s mood. “Our thirst sensation doesn’t really appear until we are 1 [percent] or 2 percent dehydrated. By then dehydration is already setting in and starting to impact how our mind and body perform,” explained Lawrence E. Armstrong, one of the studies’ lead scientists and an international expert on hydration.

    5. Caffeine Withdrawal

    Do you drink lots of caffeine? If you do, you could be suffering from caffeine withdrawals. Caffeine is a drug just like anything else and when your body gets used to it and it suddenly disappears, things get a bit sticky. It can affect your mood greatly and closely resemble symptoms of depression. The high you might get from an espresso drink comes with negative side effects just like any other drug does. Before you start taking a daily Prozac or Zoloft try ditching caffeine. It might solve all your issues!
